History, Socio-economics and ecological effects of the ‘Dam Dang’ fixed net fishery in Hon Mun MPA

The study was conducted to examine ecological and socio-economic aspect of the Dam Dang fixed net fishery in Hon Mun MPA. Information on the history and origin of the fishery was obtained from direct interview with the fishermen and the leaders of fishing cooperatives. Data on the catches were provided by the fishing cooperatives, Department of Fisheries, Agriculture and Rural development Division.<br>The fishery is typically traditional and has existed for over 200 years. To the present. there are 5 fixed nets inside the Hon Mun MPA. The fishery is leased by three cooperatives and a fishing enterprise for forms of 4 years-rotation. The structure of the nets are almost the same with the only difference being the length of the leader net. The net with mesh size of 120 – 300 mm functions as a wall setting across the current to trap the pelagic fishes. When the fishes are trapped in the play ground, they are caught with portable liftnet.
