1. General objective: Identifying the current status of environmental conditions, biodiversity and biological resources in coral reef ecosystems and coastal areas of Vietnam for sustainable development. Detail goals: - Acquiring original data sets on biodiversity and conditions of environmental factors in coral reef and peri island ecosystems - Understanding the current biodiversity status (species composition, distribution, basic relationships in reef ecosystems etc.) in coral reef and peri island ecosystems - Evaluating the characteristics of basic environmental factors (temperature, salinity, nutrients etc.) and their relationship with biodiversity in coral reef ecosystems and peri island areas - Proposing solutions to manage and rationally use biodiversity in coral reef ecosystems and island coastal areas; Proposing solutions for planning and expanding the system of marine protected areas in Vietnam (if applicable) 2. Content Phase I (2010-2011): Investigating and evaluating the overall biodiversity status of coral reef, peri island and coastal ecosystems in Vietnam waters. - Task 1: A literature review on biodiversity of Vietnam coral reef ecosystems and peri island areas. - Task 2: Investigating and evaluating the overall biodiversity status of coral reef ecosystems in Vietnam waters. - Task 3: Investigating and evaluating the overall biodiversity status of peri island areas in Vietnam waters. - Task 4: Form a database by using Access and Map Info softwares to store and serve as basic information to evaluate biodiversity trends in coral reef ecosystems and peri island and coastal areas in Vietnam waters. Phase II (2015): Investigating and assessing biodiversity changes in coral reef ecosystems, peri island and coastal areas in 05 survey islands in Vietnam's waters - Task 1: Updating the database, storing, analyzing and evaluating biodiversity changes in coral reef ecosystems and coastal areas in Vietnam's waters. - Task 2: Investigating, monitoring and evaluating changes in biodiversity of coral reef ecosystems in the waters of Vietnam. - Task 3: Investigating, monitoring and evaluating biodiversity changes in peri island and coastal areas in the waters of Vietnam. - Task 4: Researching and assessing impacts on biodiversity changes in coral reef ecosystems, peri island and coastal areas in Vietnam's waters. - Task 5: Analyzing, evaluating and synthesizing biodiversity fluctuations and proposing solutions to manage, rationally use and develop sustainably coral reef, peri island and coastal ecosystems in Vietnam waters.
Output
Phase I (2010-2011): - 06 literature review reports - Specimens on biodiversity (phytoplankton, benthic animals, coral reef fish, hard corals, seaweed etc.) - Original data set on survey results. - The Atlas of biodiversity distribution in coral reefs and islands (general scale 1:25.000 and detailed scale 1:10.000) - Thematic reports - GIS database for distribution maps. - Access database based on survey stations, survey field trip, island and year. Phase II (2015): - Two sets of GIS and Access databases were fully updated with collected and surveyed data (for 05 islands). - A set of specimens about groups of organisms found in coral reefs and coastal areas - Original data set obtained from field surveys on biodiversity. - Biodiversity distribution atlas (for both coral reef and island coastal areas), scale 1:50.000. - Atlas of sensitive zoning, vulnerable areas, and protected areas (for both coral reef and coastal areas), scale 1:50.000. - Thematic reports - Project summary report
